King Abdullah II met with Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta on Thursday to discuss the flood of refugees crossing the border from Syria and their concerns about securing Syria’s large stockpiles of chemical weapons. About 27,000 Syrian refugees have registered in Jordan, but the Jordanian government estimates that more than 140,000 Syrians have fled into the country in the past 10 months. American officials say that because of the escalating uprising against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, 1,000 Syrians are now crossing the border each day. Mr. Panetta pledged to continue the flow of American humanitarian aid and to work with Jordan and other countries in the region on plans to secure Syria’s weapons if the crisis worsens or the Assad government falls.
